Subject: Idea for the Harris/Walz Campaign
Dear Harris/Walz Campaign Support Staff,
I'm writing to communicate an idea. Basically, my idea is along the lines of fighting fire with fire. Trump regularly uses a kind of mental jujitsu on his followers. It consists simply of the phrase "as you already know" or simply "as you know". He then proceeds to lie. With this phrase his followers feel complimented, in essence, on their perceptiveness (oh boy, he recognizes we get it). His, too many not brilliant, supporters are taken in. They go along because now they get it. And they are in the know.
My "fighting fire with fire" idea is to regularly use a repetitive phrase that would resonate with Trump's followers. My favorite phrase, perhaps usually used as a preamble, is the phrase "We all believe", as in:
We all believe the tax system should be fair, but Mr. Trump's tax cuts went ____percent to those making over____. (fill in the facts).
We all believe our leaders should show graciousness and dignity. (pause) Mr. Trump is the only outgoing president in American history to not shake hands with the incoming president.
We all believe that you shouldn't spend money you don't have, yet Mr. Trump's tax cuts increased our national debt by ______, the largest one year increase in our history.
We all believe we should support our friends, but Trump is rude to our European allies, threatens NATO, and insults any fellow Republicans who cross him. (Examples are so numerous. Vary them, there's a catalog, pick one or two according to the audience).
We all believe you shouldn't suck up to your enemies, but (complementing Putin, suggesting Putin should have his way, schmoozing with the North Korea boss, or, or).
We all believe we should respect our mothers, wives, and daughters. Yet, when women must make difficult personal decisions about pregnancy, Mr Trump thinks it should be a matter of law, laws made by men.
We mostly all believe in sensible gun control, but, on that issue, Mr. Trump seems controlled by the extremist positions of the National Rifle Association. We, mostly, all believe in sensible gun control; like, no machine guns for insane people.
We all believe our president should be reasonable, fair minded, balanced, honest, but is Mr. Trump not clearly irrational when he claims he'll solve Ukraine in a day? Or that he is the best president for blacks since Abraham Lincoln? Or that he wants to be dictator for just one day? Or that the only way he can lose the election is if it's rigged? Etc. Donald Trump is dangerous. And yes, weird.
I honestly believe he can be most easily defeated by loving his people, treating them with respect, appealing to their fairmindedness and good nature, and guiding them towards clear thinking. The contrast in campaigns will be all too clear. Three months is plenty of time. Best of luck.
Sincerely,
Anthony Lynn
